Welcome to the Students and AI Project

AI is changing higher education fast. But what do students really think? How do they want AI to shape learning, feedback, and integrity?

That’s where the Students and AI Project comes in.

2024: Listening to Students

We went straight to the source—over 8,000 students from four universities.

  • 80%+ are already using AI in their studies
  • 70%+ want more guidance and support
  • 50% are using AI to get feedback on their work

Our first big takeaway? Students are navigating AI in deeply sophisticated and unsettled ways—questioning values, wrestling with moral challenges, and feeling the shifts AI brings into their studies. The variation within student perspectives is striking. That’s why we need more shared understanding across the sector, especially as everything continues to move so quickly.

2025: Co-Designing Together

This year, we’re moving from listening to creating together. In our co-design labs, students, staff, and industry members contribute their voices and views side by side to explore how AI can support:

  • Learning
  • Feedback
  • Rethinking academic integrity

Over 6 hours across 3 workshops, participants co-create practical resources—and we’ve developed a method any university can use to understand and move forward together on AI.

Resources from these labs are coming soon—stay tuned!

Why the project matters

Conversations about AI in higher education are often full of hype, fear, or assumptions. What we’ve learned is that AI unsettles students in ways that are both intellectual and emotional: it can provoke, disrupt, inspire, and worry—sometimes all at once.

That’s why this project matters. We are creating space for curiosity, nuance, and shared responsibility. We’re building bridges of understanding so students, staff, and institutions can navigate AI together with care and clarity.

Underpinning all of this is our relational approach and our focus on talking with students.
